PRODUCT ANNOUNCEMENT

ExpeTune DB is the latest exciting new solution from Macro 4. It is an addition to our Performance Management suite and is designed to help users make the very most of their mainframe DB2 environments. While this is the first formal release from Macro 4, ExpeTune DB is an established solution which has been highly successful at some of the world’s largest and most complex DB2™ installations.

DB2 is the cornerstone of virtually every organization which uses mainframe servers. It is increasingly the repository for the most critical business data. Making the very best use of this is therefore vital to the health of not only the application environments which make use of the data but the whole organization which relies on them.

ExpeTune DB is designed for use by DB2 performance analysts on z/OS platforms and provides a wide range of facilities to help them be more productive and effective in managing DB2. A short summary of a few of the many Release 3.4 features includes:

Dynamic SQL
One of the biggest resource consumers these days at many DB2 shops is the processing of Dynamic SQL. ERP Systems, remote Java applications, even Excel™ Spreadsheets can connect to DB2 and run Dynamic SQL. ExpeTune DB can identify the dynamic SQL responsible for peak MIPS usage, or high overall CPU burn. It can then help to explain why the SQL may be inefficient. Corrective action can be taken either to change the SQL or to optimize DB2 itself – for example, by adding an appropriate index.

Static SQL and Upgrades
ExpeTune DB also works well with Static SQL from the DB2 Catalog (Package or Plan) and list it in a readable format. This can be extremely useful when users are planning an upgrade to their DB2 environments. Upgrading DB2 to the latest version can be very beneficial but does not come without its pitfalls. Static SQL may require rebinding to take advantage of the new version of DB2. However, this process can sometimes lead to previously efficient SQL taking significantly longer to run. ExpeTune DB’s predictive comparison facility can help to prevent costly and embarrassing mistakes.

Application Healthchecks
Before putting an application into production, ExpeTune DB can be used to provide a healthcheck. For example, data type mismatches between variables and database columns are spotted before roll-out – a mismatch can disable index access causing long response times and high CPU usage because of table scanning.

EXPLAIN
ExpeTune DB can be used to list and explain SQL from different sources.  ExpeTune DB provides a succinct "plain text" summary following the explain process.  Users do not need permission to run the SQL in order to explain it.
