6. Hints and Tips

Six of those present had STK Silos, and most expressed dissatisfaction with the service from Sun.  There was some discussion on what could be done with a suggestion that publicity from The Register may help.  JAW to follow-up.

2) Roger Fowler reprised an item from his Z10 EC Update.  A “Send PPD” operation from a Linux console can take up to 24 hours to action, but is immediate if done from the Hardware Management Console, although not via Single Element Operation.  This does not affect OS2 consoles.

3) AGCO had experienced S46D RC=14 abends in a legacy file transfer application.
It was eventually traced to a fault in Abend-Aid 10.1 fixed by Compuware X78310A.

4) JAW prompted a discussion on the greying of the Sysprog Workforce.  She wondered if GSE could help member companies in any way, perhaps by establishing a Newby Working Group.  There are already student discounts and 101 sessions at the Annual Conference.  This topic will be followed up at subsequent meetings.
